“Heightened requirements for production safety make it necessary to develop a modern personnel training and certification system at the local level. Training with real objects and equipment is associated with significant technical difficulties and constant expenses, and sometimes is just impossible. Also an increase of percentage of high-tech equipment and complexity of production processes in general require an improvement of quality of highly competent specialists training. Our new advance developments are aimed at solving these problems, - comments Evgeniy Vinogradov, General Director of “Severstal Russian Steel” Division and Resource Assets, - After completion of a VR-simulator training each employee goes to the production site with a better understanding of peculiarities of equipment operation and arrangement. This helps minimize technological disturbances and enhance the production safety level in general, positively influences the quality of manufactured products, reduces reject volumes and helps minimize unforeseen situations at the site. The result we are getting now is digitalization of the future, and we are already in there”.
Training with the use of VR-simulators is included in advance training programs and periodic personnel certification programs which allows to maintain employees’ qualification at the required level. The maximum degree of detail in the 3D world truly shows the processes that are impossible to be seen in reality. For example, taking on a helmet or glasses the student gets into a VR-shop where he can take samples of liquid metal, check its temperature and other parameters.
According to Company employees, the virtual reality is undistinguishable from the prototype and immerses into the shop environment as can be. Besides, there is a great opportunity in the virtual reality to simulate some emergencies, i.e. fire, emergency equipment shutdown. After such a virtual training course it is useful to solidify the knowledge obtained and check oneself. Simulators are first trained with as training with explanations, and then as testing during which the trainee performs all actions without any prompting.
A bright illustration of implementation of new tools in the personnel training process is the metallurgic facility of CherMK where VR-simulators have been used since 2020 for training and professional development in terms of such professions as Furnace Helper, Steel Caster, Continuous Casting Machine Operator. Besides, VR-simulators are used by the Company for training and professional development of Battery Machine Operators, Setting of 2000 Slitting Lines Shop - 2 Mill, Roll Change of 5-Roll Mill Stand in Engineering Equipment Design Center, work at height skill training, as part of annual knowledge testing, training of high voltage routine switching.
