Construction of the world's most powerful nuclear icebreaker has begun at Zvezda shipbuilding complex. The ship was named "Russia". The icebreaker will become the most powerful nuclear-powered vessel in the history of world shipbuilding. This technically complex project is unrivalled throughout the world, and its key task is to provide year-round piloting of commercial fleet along the Northern sea route. "Leader" project will become the basis of the Russian icebreaking fleet of the new generation.
Construction of the icebreaker is part of a contract signed between SSK "Zvezda" and "Atomflot". The state customer of the icebreaker is Rosatom State Corporation. Zvezda shipbuilding complex was selected as the sole contractor for this contract in accordance with the decision of Russian President Vladimir Putin. Completion of the icebreaker is scheduled for 2027.
The length of the new nuclear-powered vessel will be 210 meters, width - 47 meters, draft - 13 meters. "Russia" icebreaker will be equipped with two RITM-400 nuclear reactors, four turbines and four rowing electric motors. The total capacity of the icebreaker's power plants will be 120 MW, which will allow the vessel to overcome ice more than 4 meters thick at a speed of 2 knots. If the ice is 2 meters thick, the speed of the icebreaker will be up to 12 knots.
