PJSC NOVATEK plans to order ten gas carriers at foreign shipyards with a delivery date in 2023-2024, with this request, the head of the gas company Leonid Mikhelson appealed to Russian President Vladimir Putin. The request concerns additional scope of orders. The company intends to build 15 gas carriers at the Zvezda shipyard for the Arctic LNG 2 project.
PJSC NOVATEK explains the need to work with foreign shipyards in lieu with plans to produce 70 million tons of LNG per year by 2030. The company has already launched Yamal LNG with a real capacity of 17.5 million tons per year. In the first quarter of 2020, the fourth stage of the project with a capacity of 1 million tons will be launched. In 2023, the launch of the Arctic LNG 2 project with a capacity of 20 million tons will begin. In addition, in 2020, PJSC NOVATEK plans to make a final decision on the implementation of the Obskiy LNG project with a capacity of 5 million tons and launching in 2023
At the same time, Zvezda shipyard (managed by a consortium of Rosneft and Gazprombank JSC) will be able to build five gas carriers a year from 2023, which should allow it to deliver 15 gas carriers for Arctic LNG 2 by 2026. However, these vessels will not be enough to export all additional LNG from the projects of PJSC NOVATEK in 2023-2024.
PJSC NOVATEK is the largest independent producer of natural gas in Russia. In 2017, the company entered the international LNG market due to the successful launch of the Yamal LNG project. Established in 1994, the company is engaged in the exploration, production, processing and sale of gas and liquid hydrocarbons. NOVATEK's fields and license areas are located primarily in the Yamal-Nenets Autonomous region, the world's largest natural gas production region, which accounts for about 80% of Russian gas production and approximately 15% of global gas production.
